Caring for a new Basset Puppy
Feeding:-
8-12 weeks 3 times per day 12 weeks – 7 months 2 times per day 7 months onwards once per day
- Food:
- We strongly recommend feeding dry puppy formula until seven months of age.
We use Super Coat Puppy Formula or Pal Puppy Formula, also called kibble.
- The kibble is soaked in tap hot water until moisture is absorbed (approx 5 - 10 minutes).
- Meat (pet mince) is added to the dry food mix (do not use more than 25% of the total volume as it will unbalance your puppy’s diet).
- Milk is added to the food and stirred into the mixture.
- Amounts:
- Start with 1½ cups dry food and if your puppy finishes this and looks for more, increase the amount by ½ cup next meal.
Never leave uneaten food with your puppy as this will not only create bad eating habits, but can lead to gastric problems as bacteria will get into the food.
Avoid letting your puppy/dog get too fat at any age throughout its lifespan.
Ideal adult weight is between 24 – 28 kilograms (larger built male dogs can carry up to 32 kgs of weight without being regarded as fat).
Grooming:- Being a short-coated dog, grooming consists of weekly brushing, (with a stiff brush) to remove dead hair and a bath when needed. Use an insecticidal shampoo to help control fleas.
Remove built up wax from your puppy’s ears with a soft cloth moistened with baby oil. Do not force your finger too far into the ear canal.
Clip nails every two weeks even if your puppy does not need it. This will get your puppy used to having their nails clipped at an early age.
Worming:- Monthly heartworm treatment is recommended.
The first day of each month is a recommended date as it is easy to remember.
Drontal Allwormer controls all other worms. This is done every 2 weeks until your puppy is 12 weeks old and monthly until six months of age. Thereafter every 2 – 3 months. Weigh your puppy prior to worming.
Never under dose when using worming tablets as worms can become immune to the ingredients in the tablet if they are not killed outright (eg. If a puppy is 6kg give a whole tablet – worming tablets are usually 1 tablet per 10 kg’s).
Our puppies are vaccinated for canine distemper, Adenovirus type 2, and Parvovirus vaccine (living). We use Protech C4.
They will need another vaccination at 12 weeks of age.
